Measles Resurgence
While once thought eradicated in the US, measles has had a remarkable resurgence since late 2024 due to declining vaccination rates. Colorado has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the United States, putting many people at risk for this deadly disease.
Measles is a highly contagious, acute viral illness which can cause severe health complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis (brain inflammation), and death. It is transmitted by contact with an infected person through coughing and sneezing. Infected people are contagious from four days before their rash emerges through four days afterwards. Even after an infected person leaves a location, the virus remains viable for up to two hours on surfaces and in the air.
For more information about recognizing measles, visit www.cdc.gov/measles/signs-symptoms And if you have symptoms or questions, contact your medical provider; students can call the HCC at 303.871.2205.

For any requirements showing as "Non Compliant," follow the Submit Proof instructions below, or contact the HCC for more information.
Submit Proof of MMR Vaccination
Your physician will need to enter the dates of your vaccinations, and sign the Certificate of Immunization.
In place of the Certificate of Immunization, you may submit:

Get your MMR vaccination near/on campus
As preventative care, MMR immunizations are usually covered by most insurance plans, and are available at many primary care and retail pharmacy clinics.
DU students can receive MMR vaccinations at the DU Health & Counseling Center. Visit our Service Fees page for details on what it would cost--from nothing up to $120, depending on your insurance coverage and DU Health Fee status. Schedule online through MyHealth or by calling 303.871.2205.
Exemptions to the MMR Vaccination Requirement
Note that both medical and non-medical exemptions are time-limited; unlike vaccination protection, exemptions expire. You must submit vaccination proof OR a new exemption request before your current exemption expires.
Medical Exemptions
Medical exemptions must be requested by submitting a letter or statement signed by your healthcare provider indicating the clinically supported reason(s) you should not receive the MMR vaccine. This letter must include the time period for which the exemption is valid.
The CDPHE Vaccine Exemption page offers a certificate of medical exemption that can be completed with an immunizing provider and then submitted to DU HCC.
Non-medical Exemptions
There are two options for filing a non-medical exemption. Both options are reset annually such that a filed exemption will expire on July 31, 2025.
- Review the "Online Immunization Education Module" from the CDPHE Vaccine Exemption page. Once viewing is completed, the student (or parent if under 18 years of age) can fill out a Certificate of Non-medical Exemption. This certificate will populate the name, date and time that this process was completed and does not require a signature from an immunizing health care provider.
- Download the "Certificate of Non-medical Exemption" from the CDPHE Vaccine Exemption page. The document can be completed by the student (or parent if under 18 years of age) and must be signed by their immunizing health care provider.
Submitting Your Exemption Request
Follow these steps to submit an exemption request:
- Log into the MyHealth portal.
- Select MEDICAL CLEARANCES on the left side bar.
- Click UPDATE next to Immunization Record.
- Select UPLOAD.

If you are unable to upload, you may email your document to info@hcc.du.edu or fax it to 303-871-4242. Please include your DU ID number, first and last name with all communications.
After the Health & Counseling Center has reviewed your request for exemption, you will receive notification in MyHealth. For questions about accessing MyHealth or for help uploading, contact info@hcc.du.edu
Outbreak Policy
In the event of an measles, mumps, or rubella outbreak on campus, students for whom a vaccination exemption has been submitted will be withdrawn from classes by the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) until the outbreak is contained (likely six to eight weeks). Students who are exempt from vaccination requirements will not be entitled to a refund or tuition credit for any missed time.
