Preparing for Fall

This page briefly summarizes key information and action items about student insurance, HCF discounts, immunizations, and HCC service eligibility as the new school year begins.

Students graduating or otherwise not returning to DU for fall should review our Leaving DU webpage.

We encourage you to review resources and make informed, active decisions EACH SCHOOL YEAR. Students who take no action (make no selection) on insurance and (if applicable) Health Fee decisions by posted deadlines will be billed and responsible for annual SHIP and that term's full Health & Counseling Fee.

After reviewing the info below, please feel free to contact us with questions. Call 303.871.2205 during business hours or email hccinfo@du.edu

Insurance (SHIP) Coverage

Spring SHIP (student insurance) coverage ends 7/31 for Law/semester students, and 8/31 for quarter students, even if graduating in spring or summer. These dates were part of initial sign-up inforation, and reminders are sent ~one month ahead of end date.

Fall SHIP coverage begins 8/1 for Law/semester students and 9/1 for quarter students

SHIP is automatically billed to all eligible students each fall and spring, but you can request a waiver by providing proof of adequate alternative coverage by posted deadlines. Review details, including waiver process and deadlines, on our SHIP page.

To use SHIP, students must also activate their account with Anthem, most easily managed through their "Sydney" mobile app. Visit https://student.anthem.com/student/schools/u-denver (It make take 1-2 business days after completing DU enrollment before ANthem system recognizes newly enrolled students.)

Students on DU study abroad programs are covered for emergencies by a central DU travel policy, while SHIP can reimburse you for other care. It’s important to understand and plan ahead for ongoing care. Visit our Coverage Abroad page for more information.

SHIP-covered students not in Denver or not eligible for HCC services (see below) can search for in-network providers at www.anthem.com/find-care

Health & Counseling Fee (HCF)

The full HCF is automatically billed each term to most students registered for classes, to support campuswide health, well-being and crisis support programs, and also to provide discounts when they use HCC clinical services.

  • For undergraduates, the HCF is mandatory; and cannot be waived.
  • Graduate/Law students can make some choices each academic term, based on when they began their current graduate program. Details on our HCF page; and visit my4DU portal and select Student Resources > Records and Requests to make applicable decisions by each term's deadline.

Immunization Requirements

Incoming (new) students can review requirements and submit proof/exemptions online, via our Immunizations page.

Returning students whose previously submitted proof was approved do not need to do anything.

Returning students who submitted immunization exemptions must request them each new school year, via our Immunizations page.

Receiving clinical services at the HCC

Continuing students already registered for fall classes are eligible for HCC medical and counseling services through the summer, even if not enrolled in summer classes. If you're not registered for summer classes, you would need to pay the summer HCF (not automatic) to receive discounts; contact the HCC for details.

Continuing students not yet registered for fall classes are eligible to receive medical and counseling services at the HCC for 30 days after spring term. (You must be registered for fall classes to be eligible through the full summer.)

Incoming (new) students are not eligible to use HCC clinical services until their on-campus orientation begins, even if already registered for classes.

Graduating students or otherwise not returning to DU should review our Leaving DU page.

In all cases, out-of-pocket costs at the HCC will vary based on student’s insurance coverage and HCF status.

As always, eligible students can consult with our on-call providers about urgent medical and mental health concerns by calling 303.871.2205, and following after hours prompts when we are closed. (For emergencies, call 9-1-1.)
