Housing After Study Abroad or Leaves of Absence (Withdrawals)
What to Expect
Finding housing after studying abroad or leaves of absence can be stressful, but DU has limited on-campus availability for students returning to campus. Because the number of spaces is limited, we strongly encourage students to begin the process as early as possible.
When housing options are unavailable due to occupancy, our team can place students on a waitlist. We then make assignments on a "first come" basis, considering application completion date, student classification, and availability.
Students planning to study abroad or take a leave of absence from DU must consider their housing options upon their return, especially those returning for the winter or spring quarters.

Important Things to Consider
- Students cannot reserve a housing assignment by paying for it while they study abroad or have withdrawn.
- Housing is not guaranteed due to limited space availability.
- Students should not expect to be placed with specific roommates due to limited spaces.
- Students who do not receive an on-campus housing assignment will not be eligible for the Residence Hall Grant.
For more information or questions about the Residence Hall Grant and eligibility requirements, visit the Financial Aid website.
Students unable to secure on-campus housing
If we cannot provide on-campus housing, students can be placed on a waitlist. DU has also partnered with Apartments.com as an additional tool to help students find housing off-campus.

Waitlist Information
Our team will provide regular updates to students on the waitlist for on-campus housing. The waitlist is organized by the date the housing application was completed, so the earlier you apply, the better your chances of securing a housing assignment.
Here’s what you can expect:
- We will begin communicating with Winter/Spring waitlisted students in early Fall, providing consistent updates on their status and the overall process.
- Winter/Spring room assignments will not be available until week 9 of the Fall quarter, as we will not have a full understanding of space availability until then.
- Once students are assigned on-campus housing, they will receive an email with their room assignment. It is important to read this email carefully as it contains essential move-in details and deadlines.
