As you plan to arrive at DU, please keep in mind important housing application dates. Planning ahead ensures a seamless application process for you and sets you up for success as you plan to live on campus!
Your housing contract is not merely a set of terms and conditions. It outlines the rights, responsibilities, and expectations for both you and HRE. While it can be tempting to skim through agreements quickly, we encourage you to set aside time to read and understand your housing contract. It provides you with the knowledge you need to make informed decisions, and it equips you with the tools to approach any questions or concerns that may arise.
Make sure to review room and meal plan rates. These may change each Academic Year. Remember, all first and second-year students must select a residential meal plan. Third, Fourth-Year and Graduate students are not required to select a residential meal plan but may choose a commuter one.

Housing assignments are randomly selected for incoming first-year and transfer students based on their housing profile.
To submit a housing application, students must complete a housing profile. This profile enables them to search for and choose a roommate while briefly introducing themselves and sharing preferences for an ideal living situation. Students do not have to choose a roommate and can be randomly assigned based on their preferences.
All students complete a survey covering attitudes toward cleanliness, noise preferences, sleep habits, daily routines, views on overnight guests, and feelings about sharing items within the room as a part of their application. Whether a student is part of a roommate group or being assigned individually, Housing and Residential Education utilizes preferences to match students with compatible roommates and preferred residential communities.
It's important to remember that assignments are made based on availability and may not always be your first choice.
Rising second, third, fourth-year, and graduate students can participate in housing self-selection or be randomly assigned.
Self-selection allows students to choose their housing assignments based on availability. They can also participate in our self-selection process as a group.
First-year and transfer student housing assignments are typically released by the last week of July each Academic Year.
Rising second, third, fourth-year, and graduate students who participate in housing self-selection will know their housing assignments at that time.
Students who did not participate in housing self-selection will receive updates about housing assignments, availability, or waitlist options after the housing self-selection period.
Housing assignments are communicated via your DU email and can be viewed in our Housing Portal.
Housing assignment notifications are official DU communication and are sent to your first.lastname@du.edu email address. You can also view your housing assignment on your Housing Portal by following these steps:
You should always expect to have a roommate, whether they are assigned at the beginning of the academic year or during the academic year. There are some exceptions, such as being in a single room or receiving an approved housing accommodation.
