Using & Paying for HCC Services

THIS IS A DRAFT PAGE, still in development. Please share thoughts on additions, clarifications, etc.

As we begin accepting additional insurance plans, here’s a brief overview to help make using and paying for campus medical and mental health services more transparent.

1. Schedule your appointment via MyHealth or by calling 303.871.2205 during business hours.

  • We do not offer drop-in*, urgent, or emergency care.
  • We are not currently able to provide treatment to students on Medicaid. Please continue to use off-campus, Medicaid-approved.

2. Check-in at the front desk a few minutes early, to handle any pre-visit tasks.

  • If you’re not feeling well, please wear or put on a provided mask.
  • If you’ve come for a medical visit, we suggest not using the bathroom until checking with your provider when called back—in case you need to give a sample.

3. Check-out with the front desk as you exit, to pay the copay, as determined by your plan’s contracted rate and your annual plan usage (deductible/ out-of-pocket maximum).

  • The HCC will bill your insurance plan for you, and we will follow-up IF there is an additional amount due from or to you. For example, if an off-campus lab bills related to your visit; or if your annual plan usage (such as deductible or out-of-pocket maximum) was confirmed.

Important Notes about Scheduling & Insurance

  • Most insurance plans do not cover multiple visit types in a single day: for example, having a medical provider visit and a counseling appointment on same day. To avoid having to pay out of pocket, students should schedule.  (Having labs on same day/visit as provider consultations are generally fine.)
  • Addressing multiple types of concerns within a single medical visit likely means multiple charges billed to you (higher costs). For example, while an annual wellness check (preventative) may be covered at no cost (beyond a copay), also handling a sore throat or ongoing health condition in the same visit would be billable. Labs

No Cost Services (covered by Student Health Fee)

  • *weekday drop-in mental health consultations (1-3pm at HCC Ritchie Center)
  • *24/7 on call provider phone triage (medical and mental health consultations)
  • CAPE advocacy services
  • prevention, education, and involvement opportunities for well-being

Why is my plan not accepted?‡

Like off-campus healthcare providers, the HCC must be contracted with (and our providers credentialed by) each insurance plan/company in order to be considered “in network,” and thus able to offer their members a discounted care. Without the contract, you must pay the higher, “out of network” costs to us, and hope the plan will reimburse you.

We continue working on accepting more plans, but will NOT be able to accept:

  • Any non-Colorado Medicaid plan. These state plans are designed for in-state usage, and don’t cover, or don’t provide required minimum coverage, in Colorado. Students on these plans will not be approved for SHIP waivers, and so should accept SHIP instead of their home state Medicaid plans.
  • Tri-Care
  • Kaiser Permanent (KP) plans, including KP Colorado Medicaid. As part of their integrated business model, KP requires plan members to use KP facilities/providers for regular, ongoing care. The nearest KP location to the DU campus is their Englewood facility at 2955 S Broadway, Englewood, CO 80113.

Students should use their plan’s website or Member Services number (on back of coverage card) to find nearby, in-network providers.
