Using & Paying for HCC Services

Beginning Fall 2026, the HCC will begin billing insurance for medical and counseling visits.

  • from August 1st for Law/Semester students
  • from September 1st for Quarter students

 

Here’s a brief overview of how students should use and pay for campus clinical services:

  • DU students are eligible to use HCC services when currently enrolled in largely/entirely in-person and degree-seeking programs at DU. (Benefitted DU employees using tuition benefits are not eligible.)

  • Before scheduling, please review the accepted insurance summary below, so you understand payment expectations for your visit.

     

1. SCHEDULE your HCC appointment via MyHealth or by calling 303.871.2205 during business hours.

  • We do not offer drop-in*, urgent, or emergency care.   
    • *We DO offer drop-in mental health consultations at the Ritchie Center, between 1 and 3pm weekdays, no appointment needed. Check other no cost resources below.

 

2. CHECK-IN at the HCC front desk a few minutes early, to handle any pre-visit tasks.

  • Bring your current health insurance card: hardcopy or eversion (in your plan's app).
  • If you’re not feeling well, please wear or put on a provided mask.
  • If you’ve come for a medical visit, we suggest not using the bathroom until checking with your provider when called back—in case you need to give a sample.

 

3. CHECK-OUT with the front desk as you exit, to pay as summarized below:

Students with one of these "in network" insurance plans...

  • Anthem (Blue Cross Blue Shield), including DU SHIP
  • Aetna 
  • Cigna
  • United Health

...will pay the HCC your insurance card copay; and we’ll bill your insurance. 

We will follow-up IF there are additional amounts due from or to you. (For example, labs billed after your visit; or if confirmed you’d reached your deductible/ out-of-pocket max.)

As we finalize contracts with other plans, we will add to the "in network" list.

Students on most other insurance plans...

...can pay the HCC “self pay” rate; and then submit HCC receipt to your plan for possible reimbursement. (DU/HCC is not involved in that process.)

Note that, by plan design (not DU decision), students on Medicaid, Kaiser Permanente (KP) student, and/or Tri-care plans will likely NOT be reimbursed for HCC services; these plans require members to use their own or approved providers.

Students on "in network" plans can choose to pay for visits at self-pay rates, meaning the HCC will not bill their insurance, visit details will not be visible in their plan records, and costs will not count toward plan deductibles or out-of-pocket maximums. But all HCC visits will be documented, and thus visible, in students' DU myHealth records.

Self-pay charges must be paid in full within 30 days of service, or the charge will revert to Full Rate.

Important Notes about Scheduling, Insurance & Payments

  • Co-pays and other service charges on your HCC account can be paid in various ways; review our Payments page for options.
  • Even if your academic program (such as graduate assistantship) covers the cost of SHIP (and/or the Student Health Fee), you (the student) are responsible for paying for individual service costs.
  • Most insurance plans do not cover multiple visit types in a single day: for example, having a medical provider visit and a counseling appointment on the same day. To avoid having to pay out-of-pocket for the second visit, students should schedule differing types of provider visits on different days. (Having labs or picking up medications on same day/visit as provider consultations are generally fine.)
  • Addressing multiple types of concerns within a single medical visit may means multiple charges billed to you (higher costs). For example, while an annual wellness check (preventative) may be covered at no cost beyond a copay, also handling a sore throat or discussing an ongoing health condition in the same visit would be billable.

 

These plan payment expectations and limitations are just as they would be with off-campus, community-based providers.
