Responsibility of SDS with Student Privacy
The University of Denver is committed to protecting student records and keeping them accurate. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 sets forth requirements regarding the privacy of student education records. It applies to school districts, public K–12 schools, and colleges or universities that receive federal education funding from programs administered by the U.S. Department of Education.
FERPA provides students with several rights regarding their educational records. FERPA gives students the right:
To inspect and review their student records.
To inspect records maintained by campus offices concerning disclosure of confidential information from their student records.
To seek corrections of their records through a request to amend the records, or a request for a hearing to challenge the content of their records, or to include a written statement.
These rights belong to current and former matriculated students who have attended the university.
If a student wants the University of Denver to share their records with someone else—such as a parent, attorney, or employer—they must provide written permission. Without the student's consent, the university will not release records.
Current and former students who wish to make a FERPA-related request to view records must submit an online request to the Office of the Registrar.
